Artist statement
My work consists of stylized realism that involves detail found in the natural world, with a hint of fantastical elements. The artwork I create often has sharp and precise linework that aims to capture the striking detail of nature to create bold and subtle statements. I believe in respecting the natural world and seeing the wonder in all beautiful creatures found in it. Recently, my work centers around the combination and interaction of art and science, as well as capturing images from life. My work in scientific and medical illustration is sparked by the desire to help bridge information gaps between the scientific community and the public, and make scientific information more accessible through art.
If I need references for my animal and nature work, I work from live observation while at zoos, conservation centers, museums, and on nature walks, or take photographs of things I want to embody later through art. My fantasy work is often a combination of my own imagination and references, or simply based on what caught my eye and inspired me to create. I enjoy character design and the creation process of whimsical work. For me inspiration can be found everywhere, and my artwork is a showcase of what I find interesting, magical, and bold that I want to share with others.
Education through visual media that aims to enhance audience engagement and understanding of complex medical and scientific topics.
